Egyptian PapyrusEntrust our passionate tour leaders — many of them qualified Egyptologists — to lead you through the birthplaces of civilisations and faiths, to the great historical timelines of antiquity. Join us on an Elite Tour Club Cultural Tour to profound Egypt. Examine the Great Pyramid — the Pyramid of Khufu — the oldest and largest in Giza. One of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Ancient World’; be in communion with the last remaining Wonder on that glorious list to actually exist. But another wonder, Pharaoh King Tutankhamun’s famous gold mask, is displayed in Cairo Museum. Moulded to ‘face’ reams of scull bandaging, its 11kg of solid gold epitomises dynasties that buried treasures with their corpses — when ‘you can’t take it with you’ was blissfully unthinkable.
Red-gold in colour, ‘Petra’ refers to soft and hard rocks, and it built a city of historical significance in the Jordanian governorate of Ma’an. Sandstone and granite rock-hewn architecture and water conduits are the Wow-factors here. Established as the capital city of the Nabataeans, Petra is a cultural symbol of Jordan: its main attraction. It rises from slopes at Mount Hor, in the mountain basin that flanks Wadi Arabah — the mighty valley that trails from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba.
Since its first dome was completed at the end of the 4th century, Christian pilgrims and cultural tourists have thronged to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem. This Church endured a devastating fire in 614, and its second in 966. In 1009, Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah — in an orgy of hate for everything Christian — ordered the Church’s wholesale destruction. Almost all except 4th century pillar-work was flattened; enough to shock Europe, cause anti-Semitic banishment and ignite the First Crusades.
Cross the border into Syria, and journey to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bosra. Here 80,000 inhabitants once lived. In the 2nd century BC, Canaanite hordes — the Nabataeans — conquered Bosra; by 71 BC it was the capital of their Nabatean Kingdom. Then the Romans stormed in and named it Nova Trajana Bostra, and their city became the trading capital of the entire Arabia Petraea. True to Empire form, by 106 AD ‘Bostra’ was resplendent with porticoes, public baths, an imposing citadel and a magnificent Roman theatre.
Khartoum. What does this name bring to mind in history, a 19th century siege, or a 1960s epic movie about a siege? In 1885, after that siege — it took 313 days — 50,000 Mahdist warriors broke through the city walls. They speared and “cut to pieces” General Gordon and his 8,000 Egyptian and British soldiers along with their Sudanese tribal sympathisers. “Perhaps the worst army that has ever marched to war”, wrote Winston Churchill. 4,000 innocent citizens were also massacred, while others were forced into slavery. The Siege of Khartoum ended with Gordon’s head on a stake; they presented it to Mahdi chiefs and raucously celebrated their victory.
